Why a Launcher

We will need to download a Minecraft Launcher which we can use to create profiles. We will use the profiles for different stages in our development. In most launchers we will be able to copy different profiles thus letting us test mods separately in one profile, test mods together in another, then move them into the mod pack profile and test against the server.

Which Launcher

There are different launchers, which one you'll use is up to you, it depends on what you're comfortable with. Currently I prefer GDLauncher, but I have tried both the Twitch/CurseForge Launcher, MultiMC and of course the default Minecraft Launcher. A good launcher will take away the drudgery for you, however, the Minecraft Launcher is good enough, as creating a mod pack requires documentation and testing which doesn't make the "download drudgery" that painful compared to the other work you will need to do.
