Persistent Identifiers
A Persistent Identifier allows for the unique identification of a categories such as a book or chapter, institution, project, or maker. The aim of a persistent identifier is to provide a single, unambiguous, machine-readable reference to a physical or digital object. This has proved to be impossible without strict top-down human data management, but we're trying.
Thoth supports the inclusion of ORCiD identifiers to a Contributor.
There are several databases of institution identifiers. Funder Registry is run by CrossRef, which provides Crossref funder IDs. An open and community-led option is ROR (which has superseded GRID, whose database is correlated with Wikidata, and ISNI.
Thoth supports the inclusion of Funder Registry DOIs and ROR identifiers to an Institution.
Thoth currently supports a number of object identifiers, depending on the type of object that needs to be identified:
-
Work
- DOI (for Book Chapter, Monograph, and Edited Book)
- LCCN (for Monograph and Edited Book)
- OCLC Number (for Monograph and Edited Book)
- Publication
- Series
Subject identifiers provide a standardized schema of classifying thematic subjects. Most subject identifiers are copyrighted schemata with limited reach, especially the schemes of Bowker and Kindle Digital Publishing. The only open standard is Thema.
Thoth currently supports the following subject identifiers to be included in a Work:
- Bowker
- FAST
- Kindle Digital Publishing (degenerate variant of BISAC)
Project Identifiers such as RAiD provide a standardized way of referring to research projects. Thoth currently doesn't support these.
The Thoth Wiki has been developed in the context of the COPIM (Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs) project. Individual contributions to the wiki have been made by Tim Elfenbein, Joanne Fitzpatrick, Rupert Gatti, Ross Higman, Hannah Hillen, Brendan O'Connell, Tobias Steiner, and Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei under the general editorship of Van Gerven Oei. All data are available under a CC-BY 4.0 license.
