The website Missing Persons Uganda has been established as a platform to document individuals who have gone missing during the peaceful protest at the Ugandan Parliament on July 23, 2024.
This initiative aims to provide a centralized resource for families and friends of the missing individuals to report and track cases, seeking justice and accountability.

Background of the Protests

The protests on July 23, 2024, were primarily driven by widespread
frustration and anger over rampant corruption within the Ugandan government.
The anti-corruption demonstrations were organized by young Ugandans, inspired by similar successful protests in neighboring Kenya.
The protesters aimed to draw attention to high-level corruption, particularly allegations against the Speaker of Parliament,
Anita Among, who has been accused of misusing parliamentary resources and engaging in irregular expenditures.
Despite calls for her resignation and ongoing probes into her wealth, Among has denied any wrongdoing and continues to hold her position[7][10][12].

Government Response

The Ugandan government, led by President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, responded with a heavy-handed approach.
Security forces, including police and military personnel, were deployed extensively across Kampala to prevent the protests.
Authorities set up roadblocks, detained numerous demonstrators, and used force to disperse crowds.
The government justified these actions by claiming that the protests posed a threat to peace and security[6][10][12].

Missing Persons

Amid the crackdown, several individuals went missing, prompting the creation of missingpersonsug.org. The platform serves as a vital tool for documenting these cases, offering a way for affected families to report missing persons and seek assistance. The issue of enforced disappearances is not new in Uganda; it has been a recurring problem, particularly targeting opposition supporters and critics of the government.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly highlighted the lack of accountability and justice for victims of such disappearances[4][9].

Importance of the Platform

Documentation

Providing a comprehensive list of missing persons to ensure that their cases are not forgotten.

Awareness

Raising public awareness about the issue of enforced disappearances and the need for justice.

Support

Offering a support network for families and friends of the missing individuals.

Advocacy

Pressuring the government and international bodies to take action against those responsible for the disappearances.

The platform is a response to the urgent need for transparency and accountability in Uganda, particularly in the context of political repression and corruption.
By documenting these cases, missingpersonsug.org aims to ensure that the voices of the missing and their families are heard, and that justice is pursued.
