Abstract

AlumniConnect is a robust platform designed to streamline the management and engagement of alumni. Leveraging Django for backend development, PostgreSQL for secure data storage, and Django Ninja for efficient API creation, our system seamlessly integrates with Twilio’s WhatsApp API to deliver real-time notifications and updates. By automating alumni record management, event scheduling, and targeted communications, AlumniConnect enhances alumni interaction and ensures that important messages are delivered promptly, ultimately strengthening the connection between the institution and its graduates.

Introduction

In today’s digital landscape, maintaining strong connections with alumni is vital for any institution. AlumniConnect provides an innovative, centralized solution for managing alumni data and engaging graduates through modern communication channels. Our platform not only stores detailed alumni records but also facilitates event management and automated notifications, ensuring alumni stay informed and connected.

Methodology / Algorithm Used

Our solution is built using the following technologies:

• Django: Powers our backend with a robust, secure framework for handling complex logic.
• PostgreSQL: Manages our extensive alumni and event data reliably.
• Django Ninja: Enables rapid development of RESTful APIs with automatic validation using Python type hints.
• Twilio WhatsApp API: Integrates real-time messaging, allowing us to send notifications and updates directly via WhatsApp.

We implement standard CRUD operations for managing alumni, events, and notifications, ensuring that all data is maintained accurately and efficiently. The system triggers specific messaging functions based on event updates or general announcements, automating the communication process.

How Our Idea is Better than Past Solutions

Traditional methods of alumni communication, such as email and postal mail, are often slow and less engaging. Our solution leverages WhatsApp—a platform widely used and familiar to most alumni—to deliver timely and personalized notifications. This direct communication method increases engagement and ensures that alumni receive important updates instantly. Additionally, the automation provided by our system significantly reduces manual workload and minimizes the likelihood of errors.

Future Scope

While AlumniConnect already provides a comprehensive solution for alumni management and communication, there is potential for further enhancements:

How to Run AlumniConnect

Prerequisites

• Python 3.8+
• pip
• PostgreSQL

Installation Steps

1. Clone the Repository:

   cd Alumni_Connect
   
   

2. Create and Activate a Virtual Environment:

   python -m venv venv
   # On macOS/Linux:
   source venv/bin/activate
   # On Windows:
   venv\Scripts\activate

3. Install Dependencies:

   pip install -r requirements.txt

4. Configure Your Settings:

   • Update your settings.py with your database credentials and Twilio API keys.

5. Run Migrations:

   python manage.py makemigrations
   python manage.py migrate

6. Start the Development Server:

   python manage.py runserver

Accessing the Application

• Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:8000/ to access the application.
• Use the provided API endpoints to manage alumni, events, and notifications via Django Ninja.
