Openmaps.fr is a free Tile Map Service based on OpenStreetMap datas providing 2 maps :
- OpenTopoMap-R An almost clone of OpenTopoMap and
- OpenHikingMap Another map for hiking git repo.
All styles and code are free and OpenSource (Check each one's specific license) on their github's repo
The service is designed for third-party use. However, there are no guarantees : the service might stop any time, or I might block IP or web site if there are too much requests. If you include tiles from tile.openmaps.fr in your project, you must accept and respect the Tile usage policy where you will also find the TMS URLs for those two map styles.
- Since ~2011, due to increasing mass dowload applications targeting and hampering the OpenHikingMap server I had to take measures in order to give priority to "browsing users". The current (since 2023) limit is that asking more than 1000 not allready rendered tiles or 4000 tiles (Total) will get your connexion throttled to 0.2 Tile per seconds or 0.5 per seconds respectively. I regret having to implement these restrictions, as they may affect legitimate users; unfortunately, the current server capacity is insufficient to handle such high CPU loads. (live config should be in the config/common-for-tiles.conf file)

\o/ I took advantage of OVHcloud's Blackfriday offers and got me a SYS-LE-5. It is a 8 core Xeon E-2288G3 + 3 * 2To NVMe + 64 Go RAM for 889 € / year This should be ideal for handling intensive rendering and high usage.
This server was kindly privided by Gplservice, the company I work for, but during 2026 it might be decomissionned and shut down:
- Xeon 4 cores/8 threads @2.8 Ghz
- 96 GB DDR3 ECC
- Hardware raid 5 of 4 12TB spinning disks (no ssd)
- ~4TB used (600GB for OSM data in Postgres + 300GB contours in Postgres + 200GB of various shape and tif files + ~1500GB of Tiles of OpenHikingMap and ~1500GB for OpenTopoMap)

- Datas are from ~2025-11-01 (this information is manually updated if I don't forget !)
Those maps are generated by mapnik in millions of png image 256x256 tiles, storing all of them world wide would be close to impossible, but, see the Tile usage policy it is possible on small part, however since there are limits for downloads you will only be able to collect small areas.
Starting from December 2025 and a new more powerfull server, I hope I'll be able to update datas every 6 month or so. Server shouldn't be the limit, only my available time !
