This seems like a lot of customization. Is it all necessary?

Its what is the recommended config. It allows for:

  • Faster module installation (through caching)
  • Testing against LTS node versions only
  • Force installation of latest npm version to avoid bugs

I've run into many issues with travis, after years of using it, and my experience with it is much better after using this config.

FWIW, 👍 from my perspective, that's a common configuration that other large organizations use.
