Onboarding
Here are our resources to get you onboarded in the lab!
What is onboarding? The dictionary definition is : "the action or process of integrating a new employee into an organization or familiarizing a new customer or client with one's products or services."
In terms of our lab, the purpose of onboarding is to get you familiar with the specifics of the Putnam Lab, and what is expected of you as a member of the lab and as a part of the greater URI community.
The Putnam Lab has the overarching goal aiming for integrative, rigorous, equitable, and collaborative research. The Putnam Lab also believes that the scientific endeavor is best served by transparent and reproducible work. We all share the goal to participate in open science and share not only outcomes but process.
As a member of the lab you must also follow the URI Student Code of Conduct, and this applies to all levels of students and all staff as a part of this lab and the URI community.
All lab members must read and sign the Putnam Lab Agreement Document when joining the lab. Inside you will find expectations for being a lab remember as well as the expectations of Dr. Putnam as a mentor. It also includes a Code of Conduct that is very important that we all follow to keep a collaborative, constructive, and conscientious atmosphere. This is a living document, so if you feel that there should be changes please bring it up with Dr. Putnam.
All Putnam Lab members are expected to keep an online laboratory notebook, see the Electronic Lab Notebook wiki page for all information.
Email Dr. Putnam and request to be added to the Lab Slack Group. Other Slack groups to request access to are the P3 and PPPkidz for the shared PPP labs. Ask any of the Putnam Lab members to send you an invite.
Email Dr. Putnam and request to be added to the Lab Calendar (Lab Happenings and meetings).
Sign up for a Github account. Email Dr. Putnam with your Github username and request to be added to the Lab Github Group. Additionally, ask Dr. Putnam to share with you a private repository for sharing your files and opening issues.
Email Dr. Putnam to request to be added to the Lab Google Drive. Additionally, ask Dr. Putnam to share with you a private Google Drive folder for sharing your files.
Email Dr. Putnam to request to be added to the Teamup PPP reservation calendar.

The building manager for CBLS is Oliver Palmer (oliver_palmer@uri.edu) and can help with getting key card access to rooms in the building, printer access, and any questions about the building or in emergencies. His office is on the lower floor by the loading dock, but is often out and around the building.
The main molecular and organismal lab space is in CBLS 180 and 190.Dr. Putnam's office is room 191. 190 is the organismal half of the lab where all "dirty" lab processes occur (ie, microscope imaging, titration, air brushing, filtration, anything with seawater, etc). Room 180 is the molecular half of the lab, where DNA, RNA, and protein work is carried out. Our lab spaces in 180 and 190 are shared with the Prada Lab and the Puritz Lab, where most large equipment is shared between labs, but lab benches and storage spaces are allocated separately. See the diagram below for an outline of the molecular lab. Please be respectful of all other researchers when working in the lab because it is a shared space.

On the lower level of CBLS in room 92 is the aquarium tank space for coral culture, desk for organismal work, and an incubator for coral culture.

On the lower level of CBLS in room 92 is supply and field gear storage.
