1) Direct serial connection of a Minitel to 'PyMoIP Server'

It's possible to directly use a local Minitel to connect to a Minitel WS server with 'PyMoIP User'. It acts as a serial to WS converter.

Requirements :

  • A regular Minitel with an integrated serial port (5 pin DIN)
  • A serial port in any kind [USB to serial, plain RS232 port]
  • A convenant level converter cable [depending on levels required by your serial port, it needs to adapt those levels to TTL 5V that is mandatory for Minitel serial port]

Notes :

  • 1 : The more common Minitel models, of type M1/M1b/M10/M10b/M12/M2/M5 models do have a 5 pins DIN serial port at 5V TTL levels.
  • 2 : Some very rare early Minitels do have a regular DB25 RS232 port.
  • 3 : The Minitels of type "Magis Club" type do have a 8 pins DIN serial port, at 5V TTL levels.
  • 4 : The more recent Minitel models, of type Magis/Sillage (MinitelPhone style)/WebTouch (WebPhone style) don't have a serial port any more.

For Minitel models mentionned in note #4, it remains possible to connect to 'PyMoIP Server' with a proper hayes compatible modem and a phantom PSTN line.

2) USB-FTDI minitel cable

3) Phantom PSTN line

Basic phantom line

  • Actually, I use two 9V battery 6F22 in serial and a 1/4w 330 ohms resistor with good succes (should not excess 0.02 amp).
  • See here for the cabling of a French T connector - only points 1 and 3 are to be used.

4) Tested V23 capable modems

  • US-Robotics Sportster Flash
  • 3COM US-Robotics FAX Modem
  • 3COM US-Robotics 56K Message Modem

5) Tested USB-Serial cable

  • ATEN UC-232A

6) Serial to WIFI

A bit out of scope of 'PyMoIP User' part, but this Socketel nice project can be a modern alternative to regular serial ports usages.
