@hantsy I couldn't reproduce the issue. This code works well:

 $container = new PostgresContainer('16');
  $container->withPostgresDatabase('blogdb');
  $container->withPostgresUser('user');
  $container->withPostgresPassword('password');
  $container->withExposedPorts("5432");
  $container->start();

Make sure your PHP installation has php-sockets enabled. Without it, Testcontainers-PHP cannot connect to the default Docker socket (unix:///var/run/docker.sock).

But with Testcontainers java, it doesn't need any extra configuration, and it can also connect to TestContainers Cloud via TestContainers Deskotp.

@hantsy normally it doesn’t require any extra configuration for PHP or Testcontainers-PHP, as the php-sockets extension is typically enabled by default. However, it seems this issue is related to your specific PHP configuration. Without php-sockets, Testcontainers-PHP can’t connect to the default Docker socket (e.g., unix:///var/run/docker.sock), which is why you’re seeing that error.

If you’ve encountered this issue on multiple machines or servers, could you please share the output of phpinfo()? This will help identify if the php-sockets extension is enabled and if there are any other environmental factors contributing to the problem.

Enabling sockets in php.ini did not fix this issue.

I was using Windows 10 Pro with PHP 8.4 (installed by Chocolately)

I think Unix sockets are just not available in Windows and Windows is using npipe

@shyim When using the testcontainer java in the console log, I saw npipe.

@shyim From Google result, PHP should already support npipe, but we did not switch to use under Windows.
