Error replacing or adding Arabic (and Russian) characters to Arabic.uchr

I've installed MatLab and tried and run your source code (startKeyboardEditor.m):
When I opened Arabic.uchr, the program displayed the stock iPad Arabic keymap just correctly. But when I clicked on one of the keys and entered a new character, after hitting "OK", your program deleted the pre-existing character, instead of replacing it with a new one. It also replaced some characters such as "۵" with a question mark "?".

I've tried the same thing with Russian characters with exactly the same results. The program seems to be accepting Latin characters only!

Error in setKey (line 7)
KeyOutput(itable).UCKeyOutput(ikey) = newChar{1};

Error while evaluating uicontrol Callback

Please kindly instruct me on entering Arabic characters into Arabic.uchr.
(I'm running MatLab r2014a. I don't have a 64bit computer, and hence, I haven't been able to run your pre-compiled executable.)
