Compacting the DashBoard

I thought it would be nice to let you know of a recent feature introduced on the 5.1.x_dev branch (soon to be released) related to the size of the Dashboards. In this work, The UIs of the control modules have been reworked:

For actuators, you can now use three types of UI. The one below is the new default, called Simple. It allows everything it did before with a design on a line for a more stackable design. All advanced features triggers popups such as the settings (see below):

• Other UIs includes: Original and Binary (specialized if you have only two values to trigger)
• You can set the default in the config file or within a preset for each actuator
• By default (as a boolean config), the settings of the viewer are also in a popup (see below) that you can close either using the closing cross button of the widget or clicking again on the settings button

Any suggestions?

qq remarques comme ça

• je crois que le bouton show_graph ne fait rien en Simple ou Binary mode
  active le bouton puis bouge, le graphe devrait s'afficher et s'updater

• le preset_default n'était pas compatible (message d'erreur pendant le chargement, même si ça marchait après. Et les actuateurs n'étaient du coup pas bien groupés dans le Tab "Simple Actuators")
  le preset defaut doit inclure le choix de l'UI. donc efface celui que tu as sur le disque et le nouveau qui va bien devrait le remplacer

Donc est-ce que le Binary ne devrait pas être un Simple avec simplement des valeurs par défaut pour la position verte/rouge tel qu'indiqué dans la config globale ?
  pour ça je pensais à des shutters... ta remarque est cependant valable. Pourquoi ne pas (dans le preset) pouvoir spécifier les valeurs binaires pour chaque actuateur défini en mode simple?

• au risque de surcharger l'interface, est-ce qu'il serait intéressant de mettre un bouton correspondant à "set rel (+)" / "(-)" aux actuateurs en UI "Simple"? Des petites flèches pour faire des step, genre quand on cherche le temps zéro par exemple !
  si tu cliques sur le bouton +, le même panneau que Original apparait (met à jour le code source si ce n'est pas le cas, je l'ai fait ce matin)

• au contraire pour simplifier l'interface, peut-être que ces trucs là : pourraient être cachés dans "show more controls", ou bien mis tout à droite pour que soient pas visibles si on réduit la largeur du move.
  Je sais pas trop c'est pas quasi le plus important ça?

En tout cas ça me donne envie de mettre à jour ma manip sur le dernier pymodaq c'est bien !

Hi, a few more thoughts after using the new UI:

• When launching daq_viewer / daw_move as standalone (happens quite frequently for us), it might be best to have the "old" UI by default. Especially for daq_move, the simple UI looks very tiny for a standalone window!

• A bit like one of my previous comment, I think that when it comes to daq_moves, in general each stage will move mostly "relatively" (like an open loop motor) or "absolutely". While the Simple UI is very nice for "absolute" daq_moves, it is less adapted to "relative" ones. Would it be interesting to have another setting that mostly hides all the absolute moves (green/red arrows and setpoints) but instead has nicely accessible +/- buttons and perhaps the step size of relative movement?

Well for the first point the default ui is the one specified in the config file 'simple' by default. But You can easily change it to 'original' and your standalone daq_move will be the usual one.

For the second point, it's a good idea!

Following this discussion topic, I think this new layout could be extended to DAQ_viewers as well.

What I mean here, is that the settings for all the viewers could be also condensed in a single dock. In fact, the only things that currently take some place are the init/deinit button (which should only be accessible within a DAQ_viewer instance in my opinion) and the settings which now automatically pop us as a new window.
Also the access to a logfile from the DAQ_move/DAQ_viewer should also only be possible on a single instance of DAQ_move/DAQ_viewer. This only takes some additional space for not so much reason.

In addition, I think that by slightly updating the module_manager, we can improve even further the dashboard.

For example, one could think of extending the current logger parameter settings by replacing it by let's say a QTableWidget that:

• lists the currently loaded actuators/viewers
• permits to disconnect/connect them
• have a qmenu setup with some additional actions (connect/disconnect/show_settings/save_setings/load_settings/add_to_dock/remove_from_dock)
• Double-cliking on one entry would pop up the respective module to easily access it

In addition, we could have:

• some additional buttons below the table that adds a DAQ_move/DAQ_viewer on the spot without having to go back to the preset_world
• a button to save the current dashboard as a new preset (either updating the current one or making a new one).
