Optimize code based on Neil Bowers' suggestions

There are some great suggestions in here for improving the code base and adding some more helpful methods:

@garu It probably would be worth benchmarking the latest version vs the earlier version @neilbowers was using. The latest version may be considerably faster. I'm up for more optimizations, though. Maybe even a switch to Moo would speed things up.
