Plugin does not work in Ubuntu 15.04 gedit 3.10.4

When I try to enable the plugin in the list it become marked as unavailable:

Thanks for the note, is there a message about why the plugin is unavailable? Maybe something in the terminal when you run gedit from there?

I don't use gedit for development anymore, so I haven't recently checked how well it works with the latest gedit.

I see in the terminal:
(gedit:23667): libpeas-WARNING **: The 'python' plugin loader has not been enabled

I've made some investigation of the case. It looks like after version 3.8 gedit only supports Pyhton 3 plugin loader. I've successfully started the plugin with Python3 with one simple correction in the code (print statement needs to use squares in python3).

But now I have "python-git not installed" error. I have python-git version 0.3.2 package installed by apt-get and gitpython version 1.0.1 installed by pip. It looks like I just need to know how to correctly include one of this packages to the code for Python3.

Any help?

I'm pretty sure gedit will use the system Python (no virtualenv), so it should be using python-git. Try starting Py3 and running from git import Repo. If that works, you'll have to modify line 8 of gitedit.py (in the plugin) and have it print the import error instead of swallowing it. Then run gedit from the terminal and you should see an error message printed when the plugin is loaded.

Tried to get this plugin working with Gedit 3.10 in Ubuntu 14.04 and it is possible.

The path - using Ubuntu and Debian packages - means that Python 3.5 is a requirement. In my case, upgrading from the system default 3.4 to 3.5 is too drastic a change for one plugin.

Since the owner of this repo no longer maintains (since he no longer uses Gedit for development), I looked for another plugin.

If anyone else is interested, I found a well-maintained git plugin that works for both older and newer versions of Ubuntu and Gedit at https://github.com/addiks/gedit-gitmenu

Heh, well I didn't see venzen's comment until AFTER I updated this to work with Fedora 25 and current GNOME, python3, etc. But, I have that available at https://github.com/dvhart/gedit-git-plugin/tree/python3 which I'll try to work with nemec to get merged here.
