At the moment, there are two options to set Double Opt-In. One in the Mailchimp WP settings page and the other in the user's Mailchimp account. However, both are separate from each other.

Synchronize Double Opt-In settings?

Do we want to syncronize these settings? I think the best idea would be to give the user more visibility into their Mailchimp account settings to prevent confusion. Two ideas below would be:

• Button in Mailchimp WP to pull in the setting from the user's Mailchimp account
• Disable the Mailchimp WP Double Opt-In checkbox and display what is set in the Mailchimp account. Add an option to set an override in the local Mailchimp WP Double Opt-In setting.

What does everyone think @jeffpaul @dkotter?

@MaxwellGarceau if there's a way to actually change the setting on the Mc platform side, my preference would be to have the setting in the WP plugin adjust that accordingly

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any documentation regarding setting the double opt-in setting via the API.
Actually, just found it 🙂.

/lists/{list_id} has a body parameter for double opt-in. I did a proof of concept and this is an option!

The only word of warning I would have with synchronizing the Mailchimp WP double opt-in settings to the Mailchimp account settings is to notify the user that it's happening.

The double opt-in settings on the Mailchimp account affect all of Mailchimp's self hosted sign up forms. I could imagine a scenario where a user wants a frictionless sign up on their Mailchimp sign up form, but uses double opt-in on their website to help with spam sign ups (or vice versa).

@jeffpaul @dkotter Just wanted to check if we want to proceed with syncing the WP side Double Opt-In settings with the Mailchimp account Double Opt-In settings.

With the fix we made in PR #115, the WP side of things is already fixed, and forms are now working as expected based on the WP settings, regardless of the settings in Mailchimp.

We can still implement this settings sync between Mailchimp and WP, but one major concern would be that the double opt-in settings will be updated everywhere, as mentioned earlier by @MaxwellGarceau:

Additionally, as part of the block updates, we have added this "Double Opt-In" setting at the block/form level. Keeping this setting independent without syncing with Mailchimp seems more appropriate to me. However, we can set the initial value in WP based on Mailchimp’s settings when connecting the account to keep them aligned initially and Users can then update it as needed without syncing back to Mailchimp.

Please let me know your thoughts on this and how we should proceed.

My opinion here is if we haven't had users complain about this, I wouldn't worry about trying to "fix" this. While I can understand the potential confusion by having options on both sides, it becomes pretty tricky to keep those in sync. It's one thing to update that option automatically when someone sets that on the WordPress side but what if then someone updates that value on the Mailchimp side? Do we need to try and pull that update back into WordPress? I'd prefer to just keep this simple and not worry about synchronizing those

I guess I'm confused what the setting on the WP side does if its not synced with the setting on the MC side. I would posit that if we're not able to keep them in sync for a particular audience/list's settings, that we remove it entirely from the plugin and instead add a mention in the settings that in order to admin that setting that it needs to be done from within MC (and then deep link there where possible).
