Possibility for a verbose flag?

I personally would like the option to hide/see information like progress, rather than it being the default to always see it. When I embed the cli tools now they spew to the terminal even if I explicitly don't capture the output.

next week i'll have time to PR something like this if it would be worthwhile, something like -verbose or and -progress would be nice additions imo!
