Description
Some popular open source projects (e.g., Zigg) have been leaving GitHub in favour of other git forges (i.e., online platforms for Git repositories). This movement is spurred by several reasons resulting from Microsoft's management of GitHub and community impact including:
- GitHubs stance on AI (both internally, as well as eroding trust with open source projects by automating issue creation and PRs which can negatively affect maintainers)
- Microsoft's collaboration with ICE
- poor quality of GitHub's software
- general monopolistic concerns
among other concerns.
One of the git forges that open source projects have been switching to is Codeberg. From the Codeberg website:
NON-PROFIT
Codeberg is maintained by the non-profit organization Codeberg e.V., based in Berlin, Germany. For us, supporting the commons comes first. Its future is in the hands of its users. You can help too!
COMMUNITY
We are more than just Git hosting: Our community is comprised of like-minded developers, artists, academics, hobbyists and professionals. We celebrate free culture, openness and creativity.
RESPECT
No tracking. No third-party cookies. No profiteering. Everything runs on servers that we control. Your data is not for sale.Hosted in Europe, we welcome the world.
At Parcels we value diversity, inclusivity, respect for people's time, good software, open science, and environmental sustainability. See our code of conduct. Moving to Codeberg is very value aligned with us in these regards.
We also value a social coding environment. Especially now that Parcels is both becoming more and more aligned with Pangeo and the Xarray ecosystem, as well as using more tooling that sees active development (e.g., Pixi), being able to communicate with these other projects is quite important for us.
This last point is the main reason holding us back from switching to Codeberg. Forgejo - the software that Codeberg uses - is building federation support (similar to other services like Mastodon) which will allow for easy communication between other forges, but it's unlikely GitHub will follow suit as they benefit from having a walled garden. As it stands, leaving GitHub will negatively impact our ability to collaborate in the software ecosystem we're a part of.
For the time being, we're reluctantly staying on GitHub so that we can be connected with the rest of the community. Should Xarray move to Codeberg, or should other events happen - we will reconsider. We're also keen to hear from you - our community.
From a technical point of view, we don't have any concerns migrating to Codeberg - the migration process is quite painless and requires very minor code changes.
